Detroit scored early and scored late to easily take care of the Chicago Cubs. Justin Verlander picked up his eighth win even without his best stuff. He went 5.2 innings and only allowed one run despite nine hits and three walks. Wil Ledezma pitched well again in his second outing getting his first hold. He went a perfect inning and a third. Fernando Rodney pitched the last two innings and gave up a couple runs in the ninth to make the score closer than it really was.

The Tigers quickly took the lead in the first with three runs. Granderson led off the game with a triple and came home on a single by Placido Polanco. Carlos Guillen hit a two-run homer later in the first inning. Detroit added a run in the third on a RBI single by Ordonez to drive in Polanco who double. The Tigers added three more runs in the eighth with a two-run triple by Omar Infante and a RBI single by Shelton. Ordonez and Guillen each added another RBI with doubles in the ninth inning.

It was great to watch the game in Chicago and hear the “Let’s go Tigers” cheer. Unfortunately the White Sox continue to win so Detroit is still 1.5 games ahead in the AL Central. The Tiger have won seven of their last eight to rebound nicely after struggling against the AL East leaders and the White Sox. Rogers go for his tenth win and a series sweep Sunday afternoon at the Friendly Confines.
