The Astros finally finished off the Dodgers in a marathon 14 inning game that took just short of 5 hours to wrap up. Brad Lidge blew is second straight save by giving up a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kent in the top of the ninth. Neither team scored at all for the next 4 innings until the Astros finally broke through in bottom of the 14th.

Preston Williams, who has been in a terrible slump to begin the year, finally broke through with 2 hits and the game winning sacrifice fly in the 14th to score Willy Tavares. After striking out 11 out of 12 at bats a week ago, Williams, while making some great defensive plays all along, finally had a good offensive game, which was the whole reason the 'stros signed him in the first place.

I am definitely starting to worry about Brad Lidge. I wonder if remnants of that Pujols bomb in October (that ball is somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico) are still running through his head. He did start off the season going 7/7 on save attempts, however he looked shaky almost every game, allowing baserunners in all but one inning. Then two nights ago he gave up that grandy to Garciaparra, and then loaded the bases again last night, allowing Kent to drive in the tying run. I personally still think that Lidge is the man for the Astros and will be for a long time, but there are seeds of doubt starting to float through my mind. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens the rest of the year.

The great thing about baseball is the mental aspect of the game. Closer in particular need to be a different breed with the ability to forget what happened last time out. My fear for Astros fans is that Lidge is hearing the voices of giving up the big late inning home runs last year. I worry about his psychological state.
