So, I'm watching the Dodger shellacking of the Padres tonight (5-0 in the 5th), and I continue to be pleasantly surprised.

My brother, in an email exchange on Thursday, pondered how Dodger fans would react if the Dodgers were swept this weekend. I just read Ryne Sandberg's predictions for the weekend on Yahoo, and he predicted that the Pads would take 2 of 3 (well, this game isn't over... I guess anything is possible -- especially with Scott Erickson on the mound).

Nonetheless, the Dodgers are looking fantastic. Scrappy hitting. Clutch hitting. Speed on the basepaths. Taking advantage of the opponents' mistakes. The Dodgers actually look and feel to me like a mid-90's Braves team.

They are that much fun to watch.

Here is the email exchange with DodgerRefugee (my brother). I will continue to try to take him away from the Dark Side (i.e., recent, bandwagon Angel fandom).

Me:

"Where have you gone, [Chris Reed]? [Dodger] Nation turns its lonely eyes to you." -Paul Simon

Chris:

Actually, it should go...
"Where have you gone, [Adrian Beltre]? [Dodger] Nation turns its lonely
eyes to you."

or

"Where have you gone, [Peter O'Malley]? [Dodger] Nation turns its lonely
eyes to you."

or

"Where have you gone, [Mike Piazza]? [Dodger] Nation turns its lonely
eyes to you."

or....

Me:

O'Malley sold the team. Nobody forced him to.

As for those other guys, the proof they are not needed is in the winning.

Chris:

I predict the Padres will bring the Dodgers back to Earth this weekend.....

Me:

Give credit where credit is due.

Trivia time: This team leads the majors after the first week and a
half in runs scored per game and is tied for the best record in Major
League Baseball.

Did you say the Dodgers?

I hope you did.

Chris:

There's another team in another sport that started this season 7-2.......
And I'm not sure there are many right now singing the praises of this season for the Lakers.....

I'm giving you a warning...... as the person I was talking about bringing down the naysayers was me....
Now look at me, having defended what the Lakers have become (By the way, I still think picking Kobe over Shaq was the right move, though in retrospect they should have gotten more for Shaq).
Point is, I'm like the ghost of Christmas future, giving you a chance to get off before you're sitting with your third-to-last Dodgers at the end of the season, with nothing more than that 6-2 start to reminisce about.
I'm telling you... Padres sweep this weekend and the Dodger Talk callers now singing praises will be giving A Martinez a hard time.

Me:

I don't care what the Dodger callers say. They also say things like: "Todd Worrell is the closer of the future." (inside joke reference to a post game Dodger Talk call one of my brothers ade to Rick Monday five or so years ago).

If the Padres sweep the Dodgers this weekend (I would bet money that they won't), it won't change my opinion one iota. I've already seen how this team works.

When Milton Bradley got his game winning single the other night
(thanks to Jason Ellison), guess what he did. He tugged on the front of his jersey, where that name is. He hit it not for himself. He hit it for his team.

And, when you see Bradley doing that... and you see the Dodgers coming back on a few occasions to victory, you know that team morale and CHEMISTRY are building... and building well.

I mean: MILTON BRADLEY CARES ABOUT THE TEAM?

Awesome.

Me (this morning):

So much for that Padres sweep.

3 hit shutout for Derek Lowe.

Go Dodgers! I have a couple of Dodgers this season in both of my BBM leagues. I love Bradley & I love Izturis. When the Dodgers are winning & scoring runs, there is a chance that those 2 players are doing well. Fans, just don't taunt Bradley with beer bottles!

Well, the good news is that JD is hitting... the bad news is that they have lost to the lowly Rockies (but they can't win every game).

I will most definitely take a 4-1 record against the Pads (the team everybody thinks will win the division, or at least who most thought would win before Game 1).
